Talk about the funk. Albums, singles, music videos, remixes, etc.

Greetings all, it's been long since I posted here but I need to do this one. What happens when another band uses the music from a Jamiroquai song for their own song, I assume they would have had to ask permission from the bands company or the band itself?
Does anyone know?

They must ask for permission and buy the authors' right. If they don't they might be accused of copying and then they must pay the bill... Which song are you talking about btw?

I think if you use part of a song (actual recording), it is called "sampling", and you need permission. (Black Eyed Peas do this a lot ) But different if you use a 'rhythm' or specific music throughout from another band or song, and incorporate it into your own song, then it's called theft. And well, some music is just influential.

Of course every band or artist who wants to use another band's sample must ask for it and get the permission! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9nWg9TECn5wsee how these guys used a Jamiroquai sample for their song "Revolution" haha (it's a bit easy to know which song they took the sample! hahaha) and of course they asked for permission! Jamiroquai also gets paid for royalties cos' these guys where using their sample, if they get money with it!

hi guys sorry for the late response.
The band is a local one here in South Africa and the the song slips my mind now. I just wondered if they got permission from Jay Kay or the powers that be?

Well...I guess that If they are a local band prolly they haven't asked and it's not that serious... much worse is the case of super bands like u2 and coldplay or The Rolling Stones and The Verve who had some isues concerning that...

No that I know off (though is would be awesome). Only that the major hit by The Verve is said to belong to The Rolling Stones...personally I couldn't care less, it's still my favourite song EVER

i once saw a local band here perform with Jamiroquai's song, i don't think they made any permission or something, it would be difficult somehow to do so because it's involving label, management, copyright, stuffs.. anyway it was just one-time performance and nothing serious after that and they don't have a plan to record it or use the samples whatsoever.. and i think there will be no problem if the case it's like that..

Yep, and If you have the album you might see Rolling Stones featured there (I believe it's the lyrics).. though they were accused of stealing the song...BitterSweet Symphony is my favourite song ever nevertheless
