Talk about music - songs/albums that you love, and the ones that you don't.|
Everybody's talking about what funk is.
So if we define it, what is it? Let's share
Hey -I think this is my favorite all-time funk song!
George Clinton -Atomic Dog (But the video is terrible! I think it was the mid-80's)
"Bow-wow wow Yippee-Yo Yippee-Yeh
Bow wow Yippee Yo Yippee Yeh"!
Hey -what about the Chili Peppers?
Listen to Blood/Sugar/Sex/Majik (can't post too many explicit lyrics)
"If you have to Ask" -One funky lead by Frusciante (my fav), and of course Flea Rocks Bass.
"Sir Psycho Sexy"
"Give it Away"
However "They're Red Hot" is definitely Blues on speed!
this is funk
Incognito playing "EXPRESSO MADUREIRA" live in london 2010!
with Pete Ray Biggin (from Mark Ronson's band) in drums!
that is what some bands must be playing these days...! haha xD
So Incognito is a UK band, been around a long time?
Bluey is from this? Is that his pic on the cover (looking like Samuel L.Jackson?)
Does the singer sound like Chaka Khan, or did she guest sing?
Love this type of music.
Incognito celebrated their 30th anniversary last year.
Bluey is the band leader. Yes he's the guy on the cover (but I don't think he looks like Samuel L. Jackson).
Chaka had two guest appearances on the new album, but she's not in the "staff" that makes the tours.
I love this music too!
Okay, this is more old skool rap, but has funk! Just something I came across!
Step Off Mega Mix
Melle Mel (from Furious 5, Chaka Khan's "I feel for you")
"Tell Me Something Good" Rufus ft. Chaka Kahn.
Funky ass Bass! I don't think I could sit still if I wanted. Nobody like them.
Lucky me saw Chaka sing at this club I worked! Amazing singer!
David Bowie - Fascination
Fav funky (or not, but I see it as funky) song ever. Even if I ignore the fact that I find everything he ever made brilliant, and regard it only for its musical value, it's still my fav.
Also Sikter - Time & Space, domestic band. They're one of the bands that made me sad that I neglected the music scene in my country, and the region, for such a long, long time.
Don't mean to dominate this thread!
Maybe not true funk, but elements. Great song BEP "Hey Mama" with Carribean overtones.
If you are alive, you won't be able to sit still! I just love Willi! He does the milkshake dance!
Not funk at all, but I was impressed.High Tone - Mevlana in dub
Somehow perfectly captures Ramadhan in Sarajevo. And pretty much any larger city in the world with a Muslim majority that isn't ethnically "clean" of any other nationalities. I've described my country as the ass of the world, but to be honest, Ramadhan here made me fall in love with it. It's just ... incredible how everything seems to come together - the modern and the traditional, the East and the West, the adhan resounding in the midst of Austro-Hungarian architecture, skyscrapers protruding behind traditional quarters filled with nargilla smoke, how the city comes alive after iftar and everything seems that much more colourful and striking.
Well, that was long. Any longer and I would start writing poetry, haha. My point is though, it's incredible how it can turn from a cold concrete jungle to something so breathtaking for that month of the year.
EDIT: To top it off, I leave you with a picture of miniature mosques. Miniature CHOCOLATE mosques.
Jameericaaa .. what a nice poetry!!
it's an amazing month, isn't it? even i feel that i become this calm only in Ramadhan atmosphere ..
We're in a most difficult economics too but everybody seems join together, i hope that this ambient happen every months ..
i saw in a mall some days ago a big (i don't know what do you call it) bedug (y know the big drum for adzan) made from chocholate!
Happy Ramadhan to you,, a few days left

Whoaa -too much to comprehend!
@-->Jameerica -Happy Ramadan. The dark-chocolate Mosque looks delicious!
Also the month for many Jewish holidays this September.
And Ramadan has fasting -similar to Lent for Catholic Christians.
And each has some sort of headcovering -Hijab for Muslim, Yarmulkes for Jews, and head veils for Catholics.
We are similar in different ways.
@--> Shaolin325 - Love your list! Marvin Gaye, Prince, Rufus & Chaka (favorites) Gap Band, Kool & the Gang, Ohio Players (classics)!
Never heard Invisible Man's Band, Slave, BT Express Thanks!
I remember Cameo's Word up!
Just thought of a couple more:
1. Faze O - "Riding High"....I'm not a weed smoker, but If I were this is def the record I would blaze to.
2. Parliament/Funkadelic - Anything by these guys. I can't believe I left them off my first list. I specifically like "Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Of the Sucka), "Mothership Connection" and "Flashlight"
3. Bootsy Collins - "I'd Rather Be With You"
4. Heatwave - "Boogie Nights" and "Groove Line" - these actually may be considered disco.
Oh I love Ramadhan...Happy Ramadhan Everyone!
It is indeed. I never felt it quite as strong as this year, though. And the big drum out of chocolate sounds... amazing haha. Although, I never heard of a drum for Adhan, we have a cannon to announce breaking the fast, it's a Turkish tradition.
We are indeed. About the headcovering, you only need to take into account the area in which all three religions developed. It was pretty much a necessity, I think.
About fasting, the difference is that Muslims abstain completely from food and drink till sunrise, but yea, I get yer point This year it was quite hard for people with obligations considering it's summer, and it was a hot one. But people like me on summer vacation were all right I did damage my sleeping pattern somewhat but I guess it'll fall back into routine, since I can't exactly go to sleep at 5 in the morning and wake up at 3 anymore.
@ Jameerica -interesting to learn of religions. Great film "The Holy Land" narr by Peter Berger (Columbia Univ.)
Summer is over and so is sleeping in! My kids are off to school! Enjoy Ramadhan.
a cannon ?? wow .. what a diverse culture we have .. amazing.. in here (Indonesia) we hit the bedug to announce adzan 5 times a day to go to mosque,
imagine that made from chocholate ..
Sorry for being off topic again ..
but as for the topic that matter here's if consider funky ..
Crystal Waters - Gypsy Woman is a bit dancey, groovy (probably there's an original version) but hey i think funk has no limitation
Daftpunk - Something About Us i know .. Daftpunk? but have a listen to this song, it's sounds jazzy yet very calm simple lyrics and has a very light drum and bassline .. love this song (i thought it's sounds similar to JMQ's downbeat songs)
And if you like Beck, try to listen his 2 biggest hits such as The New Pollution,Devil's Haircut or from the good old days Beck .. it is not funk but it's quite funky ..
Beck - The New Pollutions
Beck - Devil's Haircut
OMG -I know this song, Love it! But more like background music. It must be music from the clubs. But the video looks really early -80's?
And I loved Beck -Loser -great song!
