Smoke and Mirrors

Has anyone else noticed that Smoke and Mirrors ( @ 1:21) sounds just like the theme tune of Hells Kitchen @ ( 0:19) ?

BTW loving the new album, growing on me every listen !! The start of All good in the hood is awesome. Blue skies is like runny honey.

Hell's Kitchen song ="Fire"-by the Ohio Players! Classic Funk.

Love this one! The keyboards into, Jazzy, bluesy, the sax throughout -maybe a return to the 80's? As Doc says, I hear Roxy Music! I love the rough tired voice near the end (3:06).
Finishes with the chorus of the girls "Tonight my dear, tonight your lovin' "
"Slip on out and slip on into his shoes". Sounds like "understand his perspective".

LittleS from Jamirotalk has a great perspective:
Jay narrates the story of a girl who meets a guy in a club. They're clearly attracted to each other. Although the people around her (her friends, her mom) are against it and he has a history of leaving broken hearts behind she still decides to ignore all the signs and pursue a relationship... which sadly ends in "thirteen years of negligence" (I take it that they actually got married, but it's just a possibility since it's not spelled out), where she's too far in to escape, "rue[ing] the day when [she] took his loving." The fact that she was blinded by "smoke and mirrors" is both a reference to the setting in which the couple first met, and the way in which the guy presented himself as something flashy and interesting to get her. I see it as a bit of a cautionary tale.

I see "Smoke & Mirrors" as sort of an illusion.
But perhaps a story of a girl who may now regret taking "his lovin' " 13 years ago. "Too far in to jump the fence" -probably has kids!

I'm lovin' "Smoke and Mirrors" now. Jamiroquai are an excellent live band. This song did not sound all that special initially. But then I found the live version on youtube I was like DAYUUUM!! They don't need to concern themselves with chart position. They'll be able to tour for the rest of their lives off of the hits they already have.

There's an American band called "Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly" that I go see perform every year. The love fest started in New Orleans, but I've since seen them at the Beacon Theatre in Manhattan and The Paradise Theater in the Bronx. These guys haven't had a hit since the '80's or '90's. I'm not even sure when. But it doesn't matter. They've had a few hits and they are an awesome live band. Once you establish yourself live you will have a following forever!

Jamiroquai has it made!

Based on the live version of this song maybe it should be the next single. Of course, it was less than 24 hrs ago I said my fav was "All Good In The Hood"....so don't hold me to this :D

"Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly" is excellent. I don't own anything by them, but always on my radio as a kid.

I am listening to this song the most!

It has an underlying story, and the advice expressed in word play, catch phrases, or movie titles!  Double meanings.

"So hard for you to see, through Smoke & Mirrors !

I think the song is hard to decipher the true meaning, hence the 'Smoke & Mirrors' title!
What do ya think?

How do you dance like a plasticine machine?

Many phrases  'seize the day' (And if not now, when), 'got the way' (got it goin' on?) 'no cheapskate reproduction' (quality), 'the real thing' (the one, or Coca-cola!), 'left out there on the shelf' (put aside), 'rue the day' (regret), under his thumb (subservient), playing this for keeps (wouldn't change)

2 movie titles: Seven brides for Seven sisters, and The Good, the Bad, the Ugly, Playing for Keeps.

I do like the song, but somehow it irritates me. Must skip it sometimes to go back later otherwise I won't be able to listen to it again...

Plasticine is a sort of modeling clay type substance. Dancing like a "plasticine machine" made me think of the motions of the clay-mation movies, ala Wallace and Grommit.

At least that's how I took it.

@ Taratata interview Jay says it is about a girl with the wrong guy.
He wasn't good for her. You always know somebody like this.

This song is great -double entendre's. Need to decipher meaning. Love it!
Really Hits me!

I'm thinking "dances like a plasticine machine" isn't a good thing.

I wasn’t sure if I liked the keyboards on this song at first. But now it may be my favorite song. It has that nightclub feel. It is the most original song on the album.

Smoke & Mirrors (S&M) lol! Trying to figure the song out…

A guy meets a girl one night dancing at a club “get into this groove” & “with the music pumping”.
Wake up “Can’t you see the signs?”
He’s smooth “he dances like a plasticine machine”.
And he gets her “seize the day”, “got the way”.
He thinks she’s unique “no cheapskate reproduction”.
She thinks maybe he’s genuine “the real thing”.
Don’t have to marry. “seven brides” & “doesn’t mean you are one of them”.
Years later, she questions “Wish you’d been left out there on the shelf”
She’s in too deep. “how come you never look before you leap”.
“But she’s in too far to jump the fence” kids?
Regrets? “rue the day”.

Seems logical, story about a girl who married a guy who swept her off her feet, and reality sets in. “The good, the bad, the ugly” stages of love.

Or, maybe Smoke & Mirrors as an illusion. The guy she met that night, isn’t the guy she married. “The good, the bad, the ugly” 3 people. "Years of negligence".
“He wants your loving” a reminder of the other guy.
Whatever it means - it’s a really great song. I keep replaying this one!

**The best performance of the season http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdEzi7i8DFA
Check out the dancing!

It is one of my most favourite tracks aswell.. well described giba!..
“But she’s in too far to jump the fence” kids?

Not sure if it necessarly means they would have kids..sounds to me like that she doesn´t dare to leave the marriage just for the sake of staying togehter although she is not happy anymore.
Jay Kay said in an interview ( cant´remember which one now) that" it´s a song about a girl who got together with the wrong guy...don´t we all know somebody where we know the partner is not good for them?". ...something like that.

They just get under your feet when they're young!

Does Jay's voice in this song sound like Rod Stewart a bit? Maybe.

Dutch is not always convenient!
Sometimes it's hard to translate... specialy if you don't know what the writer thought when writing it. 8)
It touches me... if I think of Giba's first explanation...
